An Introduction to CANGC

Organization
Founded in 1911, CANGC is a nonprofit, 501(c)(6), trade organization, guided by a state board of directors made up of representatives from its geographical chapters. The association encourages member relationships within the industry that help broaden CANGC's sphere of influence and support its efforts on common concerns with allied organizations and legislative and regulatory offices. The association is also strengthened by member participation on CANGC's numerous committees.

Mission Statement
The California Association of Nurseries and Garden Centers is a professional organization dedicated to the promotion and advancement of the nursery industry for its members and the public it serves.

Membership Makeup
The California Association of Nurseries and Garden Centers (CANGC) membership includes grower and retail nurseries, businesses allied with the lawn and garden industry, individuals employed by members and students in horticultural education, researchers, colleges and garden writers. CANGC is a driving force behind California's lawn and garden industry. Unlike many other industries, the nursery business is not dominated by a handful of players. It is comprised of hundreds of entrepreneurs, in the business because of horticulture. CANGC is the forum for those in the horticultural field to exchange information and generate support for marketing, research and legislative and regulatory advocacy.

Industry Sales
California is the number one state for both nursery and floral crop production and retail sales for the industry. California dominates the nation's lawn and garden industry ringing up $3.44 billion in production sales and $10.32 in retail sales during 2004, approximately 21 percent of national retail sales. The state's wholesale production represents 21.3 percent of nation's production. The association represents the 3rd largest agricultural crop in California but when combined with floral products, it is the second largest crop in the state. Florida is second with an 11.9 share of the nation's production.
